What is RESPITE?

Respite simply means taking time for yourself.  Time to tend to your own needs – schedule your own appointments, have lunch with a friend, read a book, take nap – whatever you want to do for yourself while knowing your loved one is safe and having fun with trained staff and volunteers!

Like any other job, there is intensity related to being a caregiver! Get your Caregiver Intensity Index Score below to find out if you’re in the red, yellow, or green.

Through art, movement, games, walks, music, reminiscence and more, ROC Respite provides programming and activities that stimulate cognition, nurture well-being and provide purpose and meaning for older adults with memory loss or other chronic conditions. Some eligibility requirements apply as ROC Respite staff are unable to provide bathroom or personal care assistance.  ROC Respite attendees must be able to:

  • Use the bathroom without assistance

  • Eat without assistance

  • Get up from a chair with minimal assistance

What is ROC Respite?

We are a free neighborhood drop-in respite center for older adults. If you’re a family or friend caring for an older adult and could use a little free time to take care of yourself, we provide safe and engaging care weekly with trained staff and volunteers. ROC Respite operates Tuesdays from 11:30 am– 3:30 pm and we are located at the Phillis Wheatley library. We engage caregivers and their care partners in accessing respite services.

Volunteers are welcome to help out once a month or more!
Volunteers will receive training via the NYS Caregiving and Respite Coalition (NYSCRC) training program and the Alzheimer’s Association curriculum.
